Stuart Weitzman: Shoe Designer Extraordinaire
Calling shoe aficionados of all shapes and sizes. The great don of red carpet stiletto heels, Stuart Weitzman is sharing his personal collection of shoes with the world for the very first time. The ‘Walk This Way’ exhibition runs exclusively at the New York Historical Society until October this year and, true to form, visitors enter the exhibit by means of a red carpet. Once inside, guests are treated to a taste of vintage old Hollywood, perfectly in line with the hundred pairs of shoes dating back all the way to the 1900s.
We’re talking true showstopper heels like a pair of custom-made heels created for Sophia Loren in the 1950s as well as lace-up boots worn by the Suffragettes over a hundred years ago. But the highlight of the exhibition has to be Weitzman’s ‘Million Dollar Shoes’, so named due to the designer’s use of one million dollars’ worth of genuine diamonds.
While we agree that every Stuart Weitzman model over the years has been a feat of design in its own right, a few have reached legendary status. Keen to invest in a piece of footwear history? These are the undisputed modern classics!
The Highland Boot
“Hands down, the standout style of my career is the Highland boot,” Weitzman revealed to Footwear News, calling the over-the-knee style “the perfect accessory for the leg”. According to the designer, the boot was inspired by “both a girl’s love affair with leggings and Julia Roberts’ sex appeal in ‘Pretty Woman’ but engineered for Julia Roberts in real life.” He went on to explain how he never understood why boots were made to hide the beauty and form of a woman’s leg. “The stretch suede and the thigh-high length have overcome this problem by showing the leg in its most sexy way.” We’d say, mission accomplished!
The Nudist Heel
Actress Olivia Munn is seen here in arguably Stuart Weitzman’s most beloved shoe – the Nudist heel. It’s become a red carpet staple often worn by everyone from Ariana Grande to Celine Dion. Celebrity stylist Law Roach actually goes as far as to recommend this shoe to every one of his famous clients. “They’re comfortable and they actually work with a lot of things,” he told Pop Sugar. “You can wear it with a pantsuit, a long gown, a skirt, [or] a short cocktail dress.”
Those who prefer a slightly lower heel, the Nudist Song features a shorter heel making for an easier, more comfortable fit.
The Alex Wedge
If you’re wondering where you may have seen this flattering wedge design before, you can thank a certain Jennifer Aniston. The actress is often spotted wearing her trusty Stuart Weitzman Alex Wedge sandals, to which the designer freely attributes its success. “It was a hand-crocheted espadrille wedge, featured in Us Weekly on Jennifer Aniston wearing it with eight different outfits.”
The Lowland Boot
Like its high-heeled mate, the Lowland boot by Stuart Weitzman has become a wardrobe must-have. It even has the supermodel stamp of approval. “Gisele [Bündchen] told me that every girl she knows is going to want a pair — how right she was,” he said. The Brazilian beauty would go on to front several campaigns for Weitzman. “After our campaign shoot with the thigh-high boot, Gisele said ‘What are you going to do with these shoes? Can I have these ones?’ and I said, ‘Of course,'” the designer said to Glamour. “Three days later, she wore them in a park with her husband and kids and it was a paparazzi scene. I’m not so proud as to say I can pick every great winner, but the girls can.”
